Studio Policies

Welcome to piano lessons! It is important that you read through and agree to my studio policies before registering for piano lessons.

Rates for Fall 2022

$28.00 per half hour private in-studio lesson

Payment

Lessons are to be paid in advance for an entire month of weekly 30-minute lessons.  Payment is due the first lesson of the month.  An invoice will be issued to the student at the last lesson of each month itemizing lessons and materials. Payments can be made with a check, Zelle, or Paypal.

Cancellations and Make-up Lessons

Students are responsible for paying for all the lessons in the month, even if the student is unable to attend every lesson. Students may make up a missed lesson by checking my website for available make-up times. The last week in May will be a make-up week for anyone who has missed up to two lessons during the school year. Lessons missed without notice will be forfeited. Students with any type of cold/flu or COVID-19 symptoms or exposure will be switched to online lessons.

Music Bucks Piano Incentive Program

Students earn Music Bucks for activities they do beyond their required lesson assignments. A complete list of qualifying activities will be given to each student. Students may turn their Music Bucks in for toy or candy prizes.

Music

All lesson materials will be available for purchase.  Materials used during the lesson will be added to your monthly invoice.  Students may bring books or sheet music from home if they are at the appropriate level.

Practice

I recommend students practice 20 to 30 minutes a day, depending on their age.  If a student is too busy to practice, they shouldn’t be taking piano lessons.  Progress simply cannot happen without practice. The teacher has the right to discontinue lessons with any student who is consistently not practicing.

Recitals (not available during the pandemic)

The Spring Recital is typically held at a church.  Students are strongly encouraged to perform in all performance opportunities, but the decision to perform is left up to each family.  Students are not required to memorize their songs.  Other performance opportunities may be offered throughout the year.

Pianos

Keyboards may be used for the first six months, but after that time students need to practice on a full sized acoustic or digital piano. Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace often have great deals on pianos. It is very important to have your piano tuned at least once a year.  Students should not be required to practice on a small keyboard or an out of tune piano!

Discontinuing Lessons

The teacher reserves the right to terminate lessons at any time.  Any student who is consistently not practicing, misbehaving during lessons, or the family is not respecting my studio policies may have their lessons terminated.  Students may choose to discontinue lessons at anytime, but there will not be a refund for lessons already paid for.

Summer Lessons

I encourage all students to continue taking piano lessons during the summer months. I offer a flexible schedule with both day and evening times. Students may choose the day and time for each summer lesson from my calendar of available times.  A minimum of three prepaid summer lessons is required to reserve a fall time slot.

Photographs

In the spring I will be requesting a photo of each student to be used in the Spring Recital program.  Please keep this in mind when ordering your child's school photos.  You may bring the photo in at any time.

Minnesota Taxes and Credits

I recommend keeping records of all of your piano lesson invoices and payments to receive a Minnesota Income Tax credit for music lessons.  Consult a tax accountant for more specific information.

In-Person lessons

Lessons are currently held in-person except during illness and inclement weather. Wearing a mask is optional for students. I will wear a mask if a student requests it.

Online lessons

I use the RockOutLoud online platform for illnesses and inclement weather.
